DRM license check

Some of the mods we made for ScaleBound check their license online. This is what that involves.

Why

We make some of the mods in the pack ourselves, and we build a new version of them for each season. The license check stops those mods from being taken and run on other servers, and stops old copies from working once a season is over. You can still use them in singleplayer while the season is running.

When it checks

When you start the game, and every hour after that. Servers check on startup and hourly too. The first time you launch, a small window tells you about the check before anything is sent.

What it sends

One request to license.scaleboundsmp.net, which we run on Cloudflare. The full request looks like this:

POST https://license.scaleboundsmp.net/v1/check
{
  "mod": "<which mod is checking>",
  "kind": "client",
  "season": "s3",
  "nonce": "<32 random bytes, new every check>",
  "jarHash": "<fingerprint (SHA-256) of the mod file>",
  "modVersion": "<the mod's version>"
}

That's all of it. No username, account, UUID, files, or anything about your PC. The reply is a yes or no signed with our key, so the mod can tell it really came from us. Nothing gets downloaded or run.

We don't log player checks. Cloudflare sees your IP address the same way it does when you visit this website, but we don't store it. If a server fails the check, we do log that server's IP, the season, and the reason, so we know where copies are being run.

If it fails

You'll get a screen that says which mod failed and why. It's usually an old-season copy, or the license service couldn't be reached. You can retry from there, open your mods folder, or quit. If you remove the mod to keep playing, back up your worlds first, because opening a world without a mod deletes everything from that mod in it.

On a server, players get a 30-second warning, the world saves, and the server shuts down the normal way.
